Hi guys,

I’m a newbie on this burning dvds thing so let’s see what I’m doing wrong...
Reading through your messages in this forum I’ve just learnt that somehow I can’t burn AVI files into a DVD, right? I’ve been trying to do this and it’d say that it’d take 3 or 4 hours... just crazy!
Then I just read somewhere about converting the files. I have WinAvi which, as many people have said here it’s great. I first tried converting the files into vcd (I want to watch them on my dvd player) but the quality got reduced way too much. So I’m now doing it converting the files to DVD (is this format what you call VOB?) but I reckon the quality isn’t still the same and once I’ve converted the files to DVD I’ve been using Nero Recode... am I doing right? Should I try to burn this new DVD file with Nero Vision or any other???
Too many questions maybe... oh well, if I’m asking something that someone else already asked then I’m sorry.
Thank you soo much in advance.

Monica

http://www.videohelp.com/ Use the links and read how to make a dvd from an avi file. Before start anything go to this site and download some codecs like All in One or K-Lite or XP Codecs either one is good and not too big also download and install on your pc DivX and Xvid packs and players like VLC, BSplayer and Media Classic. For sound AC3 filter is a must to have it and once you’ve done this look for tools like GSpot and Avicodec both help you to find out more about your avi and what codecs you’re missing, just open your avi with and read about it.http://www.free-codecs.com/ Good Luck

Hey im also new to this burning DVD bit. I just started burning dvd’s 2 days ago. This is what i learned so far.
AVI is alot smaller than MPEGS. I used a AVi to Mpeg converter called Cucusoft. Took forever to convert. To burn the files on to your dvd, mpeg files were just too large. So i burned Avi files into the dvd-discs. I used nero vision to burn them on to there. It worked great! very user friendly.

One question that is very important to know though, WHICH ONE HAS BETTER QUALITY- AVI or MPEG???

I mean, you dont want to watch AVi if its poor quality, id rather deal with mpegs to have the full quality than lose it to AVi if thats the case.

Ca use my first link and go to glossary and find out what’s an avi and MPEG. Cucusoft is not a bad video converter VSO DivX to DVD is faster but converting time is very much connected to your CPU speed and my old computer an HP 900 MHz CPU took me 12 hours to make a dvd. Also your RAM memory size is a big issue when you work with dvd’s.A decent speed for CPU is 1.5 Ghz the bigger the faster the computer I use now after a few years of saving 3.6 Ghz with 1 Gb RAM take about 30-40 minutes to make a dvd.Tools like GSpot and Avicodec are both video analysers and tell you with what type of avi you’re dealing and what codecs you may need just to play that avi on your pc.Players listed above in my reply use their own codecs and so far if you can watch your avi on pc sound and picture you can convert it to dvd getting a video ts folder from an avi with ifo bup and vob files inside where vob is the image file for a dvd. Converting a file won’t change the quality of your file start with a low resolution you’re going to have a low resolution dvd. When you make a dvd be sure before start converting to set the converter on the right tv format for your country same the burning software.Using Nero vision is ok when you work with vob’s but when you get the video ts folder go Nero Video DVD and load the entire folder and that dvd have to work on your standalone dvd player connected to your tv set.The easy way is use VSO DivX to DVD and burn with VSO Copy to DVD made by same company and both shareware if you use the trial is going to watermark your video file. The story is longer but read something before waste some dvd-r’s.

to convert movies with 100% quality it will take 5 hours, that’s why I only download movies that are ready to burn to CD/DVD like VIDEO_TS/.VOB , VCD, SVCD and KVCD

Marcus Aurelius :
i think i totally understand what ur saying now. i researched enough to know NTFS and PAL formats. Thanx for all the wisdom and knowledge. It will come in handy. My comp set isnt that bad either, im burning alot of my movies on a AMD 64 4000+, 2 gigs Ram, 74gig raptor and Nvidia 7800GTX. Though it still takes awhile in cucusoft, i think imma try out divx to dvd software.
