Black bars

hi,
I am new to this ,but have managaed to get 2 movies burned.My colour is ok ,could be a bit better,sounds is good,but I have these 2 black bars, one on top and one on the bottom,is there a way to get rid of them?
My second problem is, when i tried to burn on one dvd it said that it was too large to fit, so I lowered the quailty to get it to fit, is there a way to make it fit on high quality?
I am new to this forum so please for give me if I am not doing this the right way.
I am using Xp, and using the Sonic program that came with the computer to burn these movies.
