intermitent audio

I have been trying to convert avi to dvd without a good result and hence looking for some pointers. I use cucusoft and klite-codec mega. GSpot says the audio is MP3. When I play the dvd on a standalone dvd player, the video goes ok but the audio is kinda on-off (intermitent). The DVD player cannot play MP3 files.
I tried to decompress the avidecompress but got the same result.
Anybody has any pointer on how to fix the problem?
