I’ve got a Nikon Coolpix digital camera and it records videos in Quicktime format. I need to change it to anything that can be burned onto a VCD (of course, ensuring that the video and audio is retained). Do you think your software will be able to help me? If so, where can I download it from?

Has received some excellent reviews in various music magz. And to top it off - it is Freeware.
Another option which is also popular is Flip 4 Mac. However, unlike the Popwire product, this costs US $99. You may try the demo version - but the demo is limited to about 10 seconds. Nevertheless, it is very popular with mac users.
My recommendation try the freeware popwire first. You have nothing to lose this way.

Megan Guest | Like so many others, I have a Kodak DX4530 and want to convert my QT .mov files into something smaller that I can either email or upload to my baby website without taking up 10mb+ of space each time. I’ve emailed Dave and am still waiting for a reply. In the meantime, I downloaded RiverPast online and this is where I am so far:
My .mov files convert to .avi fine, but the size either expands to ten times the original or stays virtually the same. One 3.5mb .mov file converted to a 38mb .avi file. Ouch! I’m seeing that every other time I convert. My website only allows 40mb total. I downloaded a DivX codec, which seems to have eliminated the 10x expansion, but it isn’t reducing the size any.
I’m trying to maintain a website for my new baby to keep up with family and friends without maxing out their email accounts and this is my only holdup. Any help would be much appreciated.
Dave and RiverPast look like the genius solution, but I don’t know if he’s still responding to apparently seemingly ungrateful posters anymore. Help, please! I will be very publicly grateful and happy to mention the help on my site, though we’re talking about dozens of people exposed, not hundreds or thousands.

I’ve emailed Dave as well but got no reply, hence I posted on this site as well. But he hasn’t replied here either. I guess he’s stopped distributing the software.
Anyway, I downloaded MOV Converter since I couldn’t find anything else that was free. This works fine except that it sometimes looses out on the sound a bit. i.e. sometimes there is a one second delay between the picture and the sound. If you don’t mind that I’d suggest you download it. You can convert the files to mpg, avi, asf, wmv or some other formats available, and it compresses the files pretty well. I hate MOV formats since they really take a lot of space but this software has really reduced the file size for me.

I’ve temporarily given up on the conversion, as I’ve found a website host that is not so limiting in space for my baby website (phanfare.com). I still have to work within 10mb per movie, but for now I’ll deal with it. Eventually I do want to convert so that my videos will load faster for viewers online, but I’m so fed up right now that I’m just forgetting it.
Thanks again you two! I’ll let you know what works for me (I’ll be trying your suggestions first) when I try again.

red ant Guest | I used a converter program from Xilisoft.com that converted .mov files directly to mpeg-1. I then used my Nero program to paste all the movies into one file mpeg file (used the export featured) that is viewable in Media Player and I could easily make a DVD with it. The program isn’t free and the limit is 5 minutes but that was more than enough to convert the short videos made with the Kodak camera. You have to keep pressing the cancel registration button during the conversions until they are finished if doing a batch of files. I highly recommend it.

Purchase QuickTime Pro. ($29.00). The .mov filetype like the .avi filetype in its default state is an uncompressed file type which esentially means it is DVD ready. Any self respecting DVD app can convert this to DVD.
The problem as I see it, as that many of you don’t wish the file to be of DVD quality. Not an issue.
File type is huge??? Of course the file type will be huge. .avi is a Windows native file format. Shareware/Freeware apps cannot possibly convert it across efficiently like the creators (Apple) can.
This is where QTPro comes in. It will enable you to save it in a variety of formats such as for web streaming, for DV PAL, DV NTSC, mpeg4, VCD, Sorensen, etc You ahve the options of establishing your aspect ration eg 720x576 for DV quality PAL, 176x 144 or 320x 240 etc . QT Pro does it all!!
Rather than whinge about a highly sophisticated file format, if you wish to do something at such a simple level, do your research - well free advice in this instance - get QT Pro.
The .mov is an Apple proprietary format. Just like USB and just like Firewire. Apple invented it. if you wish to change it visit the creators of the format as they have the solution.
All this whinging is almost laughable. If you get a product from Company X surely you cannot expect Company Y to swap it for you!

I had the same problem of you all and read all the comments in this topic. I have always trusted Sourceforge.net (a repository of open source code and applications) and when graywolf2004 mentioned that his software was on sourceforge I didn’t hesitate to download it.

“MP4Cam2AVI is a MPEG4 (and MOV) to AVI converter/joiner for digital ... cameras, it makes their clips DivX/XviD compatible. MJPEG and H263 are supported as well. Program doesn’t re-encode video, just passes video data to avi container.”

I have tried using radtools to convert my .mov extension files but there seems to be some problem with files that are to big. for small files it has worked perfectly, but when I choose to convert larger files the image and the audio work extremly slowly qhen transforemed into .avi to be played in wmp.
Any tips on what I should do?

Morris Weisbart Guest | I’ve tried several free products (5 ) that all had faults. I purchased Canopus ProCoder Express for $49.99 @ Fry’s and it was real simple. You point to the file, select your output type and a few seconds later it is done. I too have Kodak EasyShare and this product with it’s add on’s and a utility called Virtual Dub allowed me to convert all of my files and stitch them together. The virtual dub is a freeware product. Procoder lets you create a watch folder to put all of your videos to be converted in. Very handy software.
