I have a new digital camera which records in mpeg “fine” mode (640 x 480 30fps). I can download and play on my computer fine but when I burn to CD-R they will not play on my DVD player. In standard mode (16fps) it is not a problem - so I can’t understand why fine mode won’t play. Does anybody have any ideas please? Many thanks Jackie

You cannot just burn and play the file. Even though a DVD player uses mpeg2 forit’s video format, the file needs to be recoded properly so the player canmake sense of it. Try using Nero or the like for asimple solution, or if you wantto play with it, try Tmpgenc. It’s a nice editor, but the program you want is the TmpGenc DVD Author, it will reconfigure the finished mpeg for DVD playback, and I think it has a burning engine as well.

Thank you for your reply. Actually I can play mpegs on my DVD player. As I mentioned in my initial query, if it’s recorded in standard mode (ie 16fps) my DVD player has no problem with it. This type of mpeg format is pretty standard in most digital cameras. However, my latest camera and all new ones of the market now have this ability to record in a “fine” mode (ie 30fps). This now means that playback is in TV quality at real time. But, for some reason that I cannot fathom, my DVD player doesn’t like it! I guess I should have been a bit more specific in my first posting, sorry! This software you mention - will it compress the mpeg to another format? I’ve tried VCD formats using Nero but of course by this point the quality has deteriorated into such a poor quality it defeats the object of having such a great inital recording format!! Please throw any ideas at me!!! And thanks for taking the time to read this!!

The problem may actaually be a simple one. DVD’s play at 29.97 fps, not 30. The dv video isn’t compatable. Recode to dvd standard, or to mpg2 program stream, then just use something like tmpgenc dvd author to create the dvd compat. files.

luck,

sorry about the double post, neglected to explain, vcd is mpg1, low res stuff, DVD is mpg2 full d1, ie; 720x480 mpg1 is ,I think 1/4 d1. So, yes your quality will suffer greatly. If you need to convert to vcd, or better yet svcd, which is actually mpg2, it ould be better. Try avi2dvd by trustfm, it allows use of several mpg encoders, and comes with a few nice ones. It even allows for creating menus.

luck,
