Now im not the brightest bulb in the lamp but ive just done this and it was easyr than i thought,
Here goes,
Install the Matroska full pack and run,
then install mkvmerge gui,
then install mkvtoolnix in the same folder,
in the tools there is a programme to extract the chosen files, extract to the same folder then use mkvmerge to merge the two streams together,
then simply rename the file .avi.
It truly is as simple as that, honest ive just done it and it works.

you dont convert it, look imagine it like this, Mkv is a form of compression like winrar if you will, you first need to choose which files within the mkv file you want using mkvextract, this will allow you to even choose the audio stream you want and even the subtitles stream you want,
Once you have extracted it you can then merge the streams together using the MKVmerge tool,
once it has merged the streams you then simply rename the file to a .AVI file and then convert to dvd using whatever prog u choose to use.
Hope this helps you.

So, after i have finish install Matroska then i install mkvmerge gui and mkvtoolnix into the matroska folder? or separate, just install mkxtoolnix into mkvmerge gui folder? Oh...after i have install Matroska, do i have to run it first in order to install mkvmerge gui and mkvtoolnix? And then ijit after i merge the streams together to mkv file and rename to avi OR before? Thank u so much RockSinger

I dont understand why people made this MKV file in the first place... if it requires this much work to convert it back to AVI file.. why dont they jus make an MKV Player and save us all these time to convert??

(by the way: are there any MKV file players? lol)

I am new and just try to convert MKV to AVI. But VirtualDubMod really makes me headache. I have read this entire thread. I have installed all necessary codecs and programs. My computer has no problem playing divx,xvid,h264 video and can play all popular video format.

The thing that I don’t understand is why VirtualDubMod cannot play those video files properly. It cannot even play simple avi with xvid codec.

“Couldn’t locate decompressor for format 'XVID' (unknown). VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. Direct Show codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable. Only 'Direct stream copy' is available for this video."

Just want to know what 's the problem and how to configure VirtualDubMod to properly locate all codecs.

It might work to change the extention to AVI on the PC, but not for a Dvix DVD player.

ehh, im not sure that works in reality, i coincidentally did the same thing.... when i played the file (new extension being avi) it played in windows media player... but later when i tried to split the “avi” into segments with AviSplit Classic, it told me that it wasn’t a true avi (something about not being able to locate any “stringh” in the file)...

so, i might be wrong, but i have reason to believe that it won’t work like a normal avi in all cases... i decided to change the extension back... windows media player said something about the filetype not being recognized, but after i asked to try to play it anyway, it played... basically, i think that means that my WMP is simply able to play mkv files and that it ignores the extension when its playing... it only looks at whether the extension is valid in the beginning...

I think my theory explains why it didn’t work... the files not really an avi so DivX probably realizes it even though Windows Media Player disregards the extension when playing... this makes sense because mkv is actually a compressed form of avi so just renaming it shouldn’t extract an avi...

— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — -

so does anyone know any freeware that decompress mkv’s to avi’s?

I tried this on the mkv:
******************************
Download Avi2Vcd(decompressor.exe) from http://home.cogeco.ca/~avi2vcd/

Launch decompressor.exe packaged with Avi2Vcd program.
Goto Browse button and navigate to folder where mkv file is stored.
In File Name - type w/o quotes "*.*" then hit enter - which will display the mkv file.
Select the file by single or double click and or select file and Open button.
Then click Decompress.......
******************************

it worked and created a valid avi, but for some reason the subtitles (which were present when i ran the mkv with WMP) didn’t come though...

I’m thinking that using some other decompressor, or making the subtitles permanent in the mkv can solve the problem... but i’m having trouble finding something simple to do that

For those who are frustrated with trying to figure out which files to extract and download and remix, etc. Here’s an easy way. Install the CCCP (Combined Community Codec Pack)from the Matroska website listed below.

http://www.matroska.org/downloads/windows.html

Windows Media might give you an error saying it doesn’t recognize the file when you try to play it, but if you select play anyway it really does work.

If you want to convert to an .avi or another file extension. Try a program called WinAVI Video Converter. It can convert all sorts of video files (including matroska and realplayer). There are several advanced options for audio and subtitles as well. I’ve been using it for a few months and it hasn’t done me wrong yet. I got it from the following site.

www.download.com

Hope this works for you too!

MKV is a Matroska video/audio multimedia file. It is a container like MOV and AVI, providing support for a huge number of different video, audio and subtitles compression formats. It is not really intended for media content distribution on a large scale, but is achieving it anyway. Here ( http://www.soft29.com/mkv_converter.html ) there are several tools to convert MKV to AVI.

Mr Qball,

I followed your advice and produced 3 splits of track1.h264, track2.aac and track3.ass. I try to run it on virtual dub mod but it cant detect the track1 type of file. What to do next? Really wasted half a day tinkering on it but to no avail. Thanks so much

Wow, big thread on this. I’m kind of having the same problem as everyone else. I have within my scenario, one .H264 video and an sound file, track 1 and track 2. I like many others am trying to find out how in the heck you put these together, because VirtualDubMod doesn’t work with the .H264 format. And plus they’re subtitled and all.
