Media Player 6.4 Codecs and Black Hole Sun video.

Just recently I found out about the Windows media player 8 codec pack completely by chance. Didn’t even know it existed, never saw mention of it on any Windows sites. And then did a Google search to find it, and it was still kind of tricky to locate. Now I can play video files on my Windows 95 and Media Player 6.4 that I haven’t been able to before. Such as Pearl Jam video thats been giving me trouble. But there are a few that still cause trouble.

Such as a Soundgarden 'Black Hole Sun' video that won’t really play well. Well it doesn’t really play at all. It plays for 2 seconds then sound and video freeze on it. But does fine on my neighbors puter. I am running 200mhz mmx Pentium and have DMA enabled.

In the properties all it really says for it is MPEG video.

These are the codecs I have listed in the video codecs of the multimedia area of my control panel. I have since removed the extra MPeg4 codec.

Cinepak
Indeo(tm)R3.1
Indeo(tm)R3.2
Intel Indeo(tm) Video Interactive 32 bit driver (V41)
MS MPEG-4 Video Codec
MS MPEG-4 Video Codec
RLE
Video 1
wmv9vmc(WMV3)

The Black Hole Sun video does not take Divx. As I had it installed before with no apparent change in performance on this video.

I already have Gspot and it freezes up on this video when I try to have it run and analyze it. Also RealPlayer freezes up when I try to run it on there. The WMP just has the video freeze, not the program itself.

Also, G-spot does not show the file on the supported media list(*.avi : *.ogm. *.ogg ). I have to click down to Video Media Files(*.avi; *.mov : *.mpg etc.) and then I can see the video to select it. Then G-spot freezes up. Don’t have this trouble with other vids. But the video works on my neighbors puter. Hmmm.

thanks for any help anyone can give. smiley

Play it with VideoLAN (www.videolan.org) and see what happends.

I hope you realise GSpot is for analysing AVI files, not for MPEG1 or MPEG2 files (.MPG), which you have.

Your PC is 200Mhz, but what is your neighbours PC? 1Ghz?

Thanks for the helpful post. I will try the videoLAN thing you recommend.

Yeah, my neighbors computer is 2.2ghz. It could be the speed, but it runs Ozzy and Pearl Jam videos full screen just fine with the MP4 codec in it now. Ah, just trying it out.

Thanks again for your help. smiley
