Ian Guest | Sorry if this isn’t the thread or forum for this, but I’ve dug up every tech help forum I could find and no good.
A lot of people seem to be having this problem after installing some certain codecs (mostly Nimo Codec Pack)and so far the only solution is formatting, which I can’t do 'cause my HDD burned.
Problem is, suddenly WMP stopped playing AVI, even though it was working fine 15 min ago.
I had just installed a codec pack but it worked fine the first few times I played something.
I tried GSpot and got rid of the new codecs I didn’t need, no good.
Uninstalled the whole new pack and tried the old one I had, no good again.
Then I tried just one specific codec for avi+ac3 audio and it demanded Directx 9 to work, so I updated my Dx5. Bad idea.
I gave up on it for a while 'cause I had paid cds to burn, but Nero wasn’t working as well. The error was about quartz.dll, so I tried replacing all of them, and nothing.
The one good answer I got for all that had worked for other people was: uninstall Directx, WMP, Nero and delete the dll.
Then install them again and restore the dll.
Did that. Nothing again! Now Directx 9 keeps giving me “unable to copy file” errors...
I’m desperate here, can anyone give me a hand? Anything will do!

I’d recommend downloading and installing the FFDShow video decoder.
Description:

FFDShow is a DirectShow decoding filter for decompressing AVI, DivX, XviD, WMV, MPG, MPEG2(SVCD, DVD), H264, AC3, DTS, AAC with image postprocessing like video noise removing filters and audio postprocessing like output all kind of audio as ac3 using the SPDIF. It also has subtitle features.

Ian Guest | QBall, thank you for the advice, I tried it too, cleaned Nimo from top to registry, unninstalled wmp yet again, put it back and added the codec you instructed.
Unfortunetly, it also didn’t fix it...
I tried even useless Microsoft support that surprisingly showed itself...useless.
Still, I installed Divx Player and was able to at least get the files to play, though they’re awfully slowed down and without audio sync.
I can’t honestly think of what might be causing this problem. Maybe the ffdshow configuration?
Again I ask for any piece of enlightment anybody might have on this...
If it helps, here’s what I got installed atm:
FFDshow
WMP
Divx Codec (5.1)
Divx Player
Winamp (which also won’t play avis anymore)
Directx 9 is still not installing, and I haven’t tried to put Nero back yet, but I think I know what’d come of that...
That’s it.
Thanks,

samscarpello Guest | Try shutting it down hard by holding the power button until it’s black. Also try accessories/system tools/system restore to an earlier date.
