I’ve had this problem for ages now but have never got around to fix it but its REALLY irratating me now:

For some reason, loads of my mpeg files won’t play back properly in the sense that: I try to play an mpeg file that is supposed to be say...20 minutes long, but on opening it in WMP it claims the length is 40 seconds. The seek bar moves accordingly so that the clip stops playing after 40 seconds. I know the clip is bigger becuase i used to be able to watch all of it - and the file size is still huge at well over 100Mb. The weird part is...if i leave the movie to play for 20seconds (half of its supposed length) and then move the seek bar back like..a second, the movie will have jumped half way through it actual length, like 10 minutes in. So it’s all there...for some reason its just being played short. This problem occurs in any playback program: WMP, winamp etc..

So i tried copying these files to my mates computer on our network...and they play fine...so i assume its my video codecs. So right clicking on one of these files in wmp it says the video and audio codecs being used are ligos MPEG video/audio decoder. I download the WMP video decoder checkup utility, which confirms the ligos decoders are set as preferred. So i delete the decoder file...Download “ffdshow” video and audio codecs...and right clicking on an mpeg file playing in WMP now confirms that the ffdshow video and audio decoder are being used to read the file...but the problem is STILL THERE!

I’ve tried reverting to WMP 9 and the problem is the same..and now i’ve changed back to WMP 10 becuase makes no difference. Searching on google i ONCE found a person in a forum asking for help on EXACTLY the same issue, but no-one had replied- and thats all i’ve found on the issue on the internet ever.

Any help at all would be appriciated - i’ll do anything even if i have to uninstall all my video codecs and everything - i really wanna watch these files and i dont wanna have to go to my mates room to watch them.

Cheers, Tom

The story is all about Microcheap WMP 10 with codecs and bonuses and so on.Try players like VLC or BSplayer or Media Classic. To find out what video type is your file GSpot or Avicodec can work for you.Packs like Xvid DivX AC3 filter and XP Codec or All in One or K-Lite I guess you have them install. Here is link to download all from above: http://www.free-codecs.com/

I have had this exact same problem for awhile now, but have had a hell of a time trying to find any info on it because I didn’t have a specific name for it. Hopefully this All-In-One codec helps me.
