unsynchronized audio and video .avi movie

i had download smallville.hdtv.avi movie nad play this on window media player 9 and have all the proper codec installed as by gspot.But the problem is that the audio and video did not synchronize.i did not know wheter the problem caused form audio or video codec,sorry if i post this topic in wrong section. well is hdtv,divx and xvid is the same thing?

but when i played it in divx player, the video and audio did match but it unsynrco again on other players.i dont like divx player as it colour [brightness and contrast]cannot be set.i’ve tried it but it won’t change
