RG Guest | I’m running 2 PCs, on on XP and one on 2000.
Recently when I try to open certain avi files, or even click on them and a preview window opens, I get an error message and either WMP or explorer crashes.
I’m assuming this is codec related, but I’m pretty sure I’m up to date with codecs.
Anyone help?

AJU Guest | Hello ,
visit
http://www.headbands.com/gspot/
use this tool to verify for the particular avi whether the required video codec is present or not.
If not solve , try to send the file if possible so that i can further look into it...
Bye
Aju

RG Guest | This seems particularly to affect xvid files.
I’m running 2000 SP4.
Let me know how I could send you a problem file and I’ll do so.

topcat139 Guest | google avi preview fix.
This is a windows problem. The preview aspect of windows causes explorer to either lock or crash. Shutting down the avi preview ability in windows will free the file up. And yes it doesn’t have to affect all avi types. Could be only one type.
Hey it’s M$, what can you do?
luck,

niobewun Guest | Well, I am at a lost... I have almost the same problem.
Everytime I try to open an AVI in WMP, Real Player, Media Player Classic, Windvd... the player Crashes...
I have tried new files as well as files I have played fine before... none of them work.
I have downloaded mega codec pack (over 400 codecs) I have scanned for virus and spyware, I ran Gspot... it says the files I am trying to open are fine and have the proper codect. I have tried every option I have been able to find people saying about problems that even look close...
Any help would be great!
Oh, I am running XP Pro sp2

niobewun Guest | I ran the Render in gspot... and this is what I got
Warning: DirectShow crashed while attempting to render this file.
This is usually due to damaged, misconfigured, conflicting, or poorly written codec drivers. It is possible, perhaps even likely, that other media players will crash when they attempt to play this file as well, as most of them will also use DirectShow. Although GSpot was able to intercept the crash, attempts to identify the codec which caused it have failed. Unfortunately, no additional information is available at this time.

pompey07 Guest | I’m experiencing same problem when trying to view AVI files from my Fuji camera .. windows media player(11)crashes, I tried different Codecs .. no better. Itried turning off preview in explorer ... no different. I ran GSpot and it basically confirmed everything was correct !! I installed lates Divx player & codecs which now opens my AVI’s no problem ... but this obviously doesn’t fix my original problem with Media player still crashing!
