I’ve read this thread, and tested a batch of things and I just thought I’d share what I’ve learned.

Tools that will definately transcode for these devices are Sunplus PMP Transcoding Tool, PMP Transcoding Tool, Blaze Video Magic V2, and the RipRoar Transcoder. Only Blaze and Sunplus are original, the others are rewrites of the Sunplus one.

Sunplus and Blaze (but not it’s clones) can write the audio as IMA ADPCM which will save a bit of space on the resulting ASF file versus the audio format the clones use so are a bit superior in that regard.

There has been speculation that somehow the ASF muxing on these ASF files is “remapped” which is why only these tools work, I personally doubt that. You can create a ASF with Microsoft’s Vidtoasf that mostly works (mine still have some issue’s with the video going wonky but mostly play) so I doubt this is the case. Having inspected these ASF files with MS’s ASF viewer, shows the headers to be virtually the same.

So it comes down to a properly written AVI file before muxing into ASF, which is done in all cases with FFMpeg. FFMpeg is the code that is used in both Blaze and all of the Sunplus derived Transcoders as well as many other apps like Super (which is what made me a file that was “close” to being usable for my PMP). Bottom line is here that once we find the proper settings, we should be able to make these files. FFMpeg code is also what is used to mux into the ASF for all of these apps. I have tried Solviegs ASF muxer and noted it doesn’t have a header called “codecs” which probably means it won’t work, where Vidtoasf and FFMpeg both output this properly (most header info is “wrong” in both Blaze and Sunplus, but fully filled out in Vidtoasf’s version) With proper muxing, things that do exist but are not filled out by Sunplus and Blaze become available which are similar to proper tagging of a MP3 file.

The only other thing I’ve found (and it’s from part of this thread) is that you can sequentially number the subdirectories on the player to use the up/down arrows to seperate video into “chapters” which is fairly nice since the player I own can’t really “seek” but just speeds up playback. “example” 100Media, 101Media, 102Media... let you use the up/down arrows to jump your split movies into chapters.

Last but not least, all of the normal transcoders I’ve mentioned are linked to throughout this thread other than Riproars, so if you need one, just read the thread for a link.

That’s all I know for now, when I get the settings for a fully functional encoding out of FFMpeg I’ll post them.

Hi, I have a DEC PMP-103 and it does everything it should. BUT, when I try to use the recording option, the screen freezes and I have to turn off and on again. Haven’t even got to the stage where I can record even into the mic! Everything else is good. The encoded ASFs look fab and I can transfer them to the unit no problem. It shows up as a Sunplus USB drive. I did find this file - spca536nand.bin - and it was supposed to help with the locking screen, but I don’t know how to upgrade. There is nothing on the unit that allows me to upgrade firmware and nothing shows in the files of the unit when I explore...just the mp3 and media file folders as usual. I’m really stuck! Please can someone tell me how to upgrade the firmware for this unit. Many thanks.

The latest version of the PMP Transcoding Tool I can find is 0.9.2.0 found here: http://www.speed-jp.net/Download/Driver/PMPTranscoder.zip

Can anyone beat that? It’s still over a year old, but is a big improvement over 0.5.x.x

It needs some extra files installing before it will work, though I can’t remember which ones exactly because I didn’t write them down and there doesn’t seem to be any further reminders built into the software.
