DVD and video playback problems

Please help! When i play videos through media player i only hear sound and am told i need DX50 codec. When searching for this I am told it is part of the DivX codec. So i download this and this causes media player to stop responding. ALso when I try to play dvds through PowerDVD it causes an error and has to close. I know all my hardware is fine as I had none of these problems when running XP but now I am running 98se(dont ask).
ANy help appreciated very much!!!
