How do I play .avi files on my computer and on my normal dvd player? I have Nero and a whole range of different players?

Entree Rep: 0 Joined: 13 Jan 2004 Posts: 6 OFFLINE | Just go to divx.com and download the codec package, and then just open the file in windows media player and you should be good to go. If you have downloaded the divx codec, and it still won’t play then go and google xvid, and download its codec. It should work then. As for playing the .avi on your dvd player, if you have nero 5.5, you should be able to make a VCD, which your dvd player should be able to play.

nmsconsultoria Guest | Thanks syncm, I can watch it on the computer but haven’t managed to burn it to CD. I’ve got Nero 6.3.0.2 and it says there isn’t enough space on the blank CD. I’ve tried SVCD and VCD and Nero offers to try and make it fit automatically but it doesn’t work. What are my options? The file title looks like this if it is any help: ******.******.DVDRip.XViD-DEiTY.SvcdPlaza.avi where * is the file name.

Butterman Guest | Just Download a program called easy video splitter and cut the movie into 2 parts: 700mb movie I cut the first CD into 500mb second to 200mb then use nero and make a vcd. will take awhile to encode. But then you can watch it on a dvd player>>As long as it can play VCD format

nmsconsultoria Guest | thanks Butterman, by the way, why not go for superior (I’m told) SVCD format? And, would SVCD help me get less of the annoying jitteryness and momentary freezing when I play movies on my DVD player? Is that a problem because of the quality of the file or is my DVD player not up to the task?

Butterman Guest | Just Burn all movies at a slower speed 4kb It takes longer but stops the skipping.. I download alot of movies,And alot are incoded at 800kb so Burn them slower and you will get better results

nmsconsultoria Guest | thanks, have done the splitting and will try SVCD at lower speed (so far, have been using 8x), will then find out if my DVD plays SVCD, by the way, why do you go with VCD and not SVCD?

v100dragon Guest | I have found an exceedingly useful AVI-to-MPEG converter called TMPGEnc. Look for it at http://www.tmpgenc.net/.....I do not know if they have implemented any fees for the program recently, but I do know that it is extremely useful for making VCDs from AVI files. Basically, a VCD file will work when dealing with MPEG files......so rather than let the CD burning program handle the encoding (which usually takes a very long time), TMPGEnc is relatively quick compared to the former CD burner program mentioned. Give it a whirl; I’ve been using it for over a year and it gets the job done well.

given your long experience with TMPGEnc what are your favourite combination of settings to get good quality on not too many CDs (2, if possible, otherwise 3) for say a 700MB .avi feature film to watch on a stand alone dvd player? Or is there somewhere I can get optimal configuration advice from? I’ve been doing my head in all day between the manual and various forums with the number of options availabl. I really want someone to say this is what you ought to do but also explain why.

matti Guest | look if you got a certified divX player/recorder, just burn the avi or divx file to a data cd. cuz vcd is mpeg svcd is mpeg2
but avi is mpeg4 its like if you have a certified mp3 player and you would burn mp3’s on an audio cd

Nikolai Shillinglaw Guest | Can’t be done. You need a divx/xvid/mpeg4 enabled dvd player. The logo for one or more of those will be printed on the box the dvd player came in and maybe on the player itself. More and more of the newer players play these but not all. I spent a lot of time converting avis to vcd and svcd until I realised that for 60 euros (now only 50) I could get a player that would play avis. Well worth the investment. When/if you do get one, the answer to your question is burn the avi to cd (treat it as data, which takes about 10 mins) and then shove it in the player. Voilá!
