I have a video file with extention *.RMVB, which can be opened by realplayer. As I want to convert it in to a VCD, I use real7ime to convert it into a avi file, but i find it the size is too big(ALMOST 4G. Can anyone tell me that how can I turn this file into a VCD????

RMVB stands for Real Media Variable Bitrate and is commonly used to contain RV9 (Real Video 9 video) and RA (Real Audio). I’ve encoded in this format before and it’s better than DivX in terms of quality at low bitrates. Higher bitrates are fairly similar.

Better to use Media Player Classic (MPC) with the Real Media codecs installed to play it back:

1. Use something like Realaudio-to-Wav Recorder to encode the Real Audio to WAV (PCM/16bit/44.1kHz).

2. Now use TMPGEnc:

First close wizard, then load in a Template (use Load button - right corner). Choose one that’s best for your video - NTSC (29.97 fps), NTSCFilm (23.976 fps) or PAL (25 fps)

Video source: should be - original RMVB file
Audio source: should be - the WAV file that was created.

START to encode.

TMPGEnc and Realaudio-to-Wav Recorder are freeware programs, but there are other ways of doing the conversion.

real alternative cant my .rmvb files and converting these files take too long on my slow computer. Do i need any plugins to get this player to work?

I just want to be able to play the damn .rmvb files is all I want to do, I’ve tried Media Player Classic and it says there’s not the right codec installed or it’s missing and I search but nothing comes up. HELP!!!!!

try using K-lite mega codec pack.
Availabe from phoenix torrents as part of the starter kit (and others I’m sure)

If you want to play.rmvb files and you do not know how, all you have to do is to download realalt123 (it’s important: 123 not: 125) instal it and it would be all. With this realalt123 you will install in one minute also media player classic, and you will be able to play .rmvb files using MPC or any other player.
I’ve done it and it worked very well, previously I had had also many problems getting those files to render

Download real player and you view the movie with that.Its the easiest way

Easiest is not necessarily the safest way... as the manufacturers try to get you to use certain products of theirs, which are evil, pretty much.

REAL networks are notorious for their intrusive software.

Really, you could actually only need to install Media Player Classic and the required codecs, because this free open-source media player can open/play several different formats, not only REAL media.. It just needs a bit of configuring.

For converting rmbv I always found Winavi the easiest proggy to use....converts to mpeg in about 20 mins

yeah...winavi will work if you want to convert and watch on your computer. If you use winavi to convert to mpeg and then try to burn it to dvd...then it won’t work. The reason it only takes 20 minutes to convert the rmvb file to mpeg is because it uses an incredibly high bitrate transfer. This high bitrate is not supported on DVDs. So, if you want to burn it to dvd, then use a different converter to convert the rmvb file. I’m currently searching for such a converter. Does anyone know? Does anyone have experience burning rmvb files to dvd and able to watch it on a dvd player?

I tried using tmpgenc to convert to mpeg file. This newly created mpeg file seems to work well on the dvd, but the only problem is that there are no sounds. Somehow the audio portion is lost in the conversion. The video part is fine. Does anyone know a remedy to this?
