Using Premier Pro and Canon A70 - I got the following solution:
Use Windows Movie Maker (in XP, under 'accessories'>.) and Import your AVI clip.
Drag it onto the timeline, then File> Save Movie and you get various format options to save into, including WMV files. These can then be imported into Premier Pro (not sure of Elements, but I’d imagine so)

xao Guest | the trick with renaming avi to mpeg works well also with the discussed 'mjpeg'. no additional installations of codecs not required.

dmcdonald Guest | I can’t believe this worked.... it works for 6.5 too!!!
Guest I had the same issue with Premier 6.1 and a Canon G5. This one definately worked for me:
- Create New Project
- Open the Import File window (control-i)
- Select (but do not open) the file you want to import
- Change the file type at the bottom to: QuickTime (mov)
it will appear that there is no file to select but it should import
See prior posts!!
thank you so much!!!

ceconrad Guest | kaneb’s solution worked for my for MJPEGs from my Canon SD700IS and Premier 6.5.
taitai’s solution works too, but editing is a bit more difficult (the computer really struggles to scrub the clip for some reason).
Thanks guys!

hank_williams_IV Guest | I have an A70 and was trying to get the files into AfterEffects. None of the shortcut tricks worked, but it was a simple matter to install the M-JPEG codec from www.morgan-multimedia.com, and that worked like a charm.
I will also note that I’m using Windows XP Pro, and the only way I could find out the codec for these files was to do a Google search - which led me here. Astonishingly, Properties does not even tell you what file type it is - much less the codec. (Had to enable file extensions in that folder to even know it was .avi.)

ah man. Guest | this doesnt work for me!!
im trying to upload a .avi file, but it’s not from a camera, its from a movie that im trying to edit. i tried kaneb’s way and it did upload to my project window, but it does not show up, its just a white screen the whole time. the .avi file is not from a dvd, its simply the same type of file as any of my other videos.
i also tried the other technique with opening it in wordpad, and since its so big the computer just spazzes out...
what should i DO?!?!
