I have a movie file(.MPG) that won’t play in any player I have. In Windows Media Player 9, I get the following error:

Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The file is either corrupt or the Player does not support the format you are trying to play.

Is there a utility that will examine a video file and determine what type of file it is or determine if it is really corrupt? Thanks.

It’s nigh on impossible to repair corrupted MPEG files (.MPG).

Try playing it with VideoLAN (ww.videolan.org)

Yes, there is a way to determine the type of file that Win Media cannot detect. Go ahead and download a program called AVICodec at http://avicodec.duby.info/. NOt only will this program tell you what type of file it is, it will also get you to a website to get the right codec.

After downloading the codec, and if you still receive the error message, then the file is definitely corrupted. Have no idea how to repair MPEG files, but if you do know how to by now, please let me know!

I used an USB flash drive (pen drive) to copy some .MPG clips from my laptop to my desktop. The files were successfully transferred to my desktop. So I deleted the folder containing the files in the laptop. Now in my desktop, few of the so coppied .MPG files are not playing in Window Media Player, which was earlier playing in my laptop and saying the files are corrupt or codec missing. How come this can happen. The files are showing its complete size and file icon. I guess the files are corrupt, is there any way to recover these .MPG clip. Please help.
Thanks in advance.
