Need help playing AVI's

Hey, I am having trouble playing avi’s. The video plays slowly whereas the audio is fine. I have 256 mb of ram, 8mb display memory (vram). I have played the files on VLC media player (which uses its own codecs) and it still doesnt play, which suggests there isnt a codec conflict, it is very frustrating as I have many files I havnt watched yet and want to very much so, can anybody help?

I suggest using a diagnostic utility such as avicodec (http://avicodec.duby.info) or gspot (http://www.headbands.com/gspot) to find out what codec the file uses.
