WMPlayer 9 MPEG Playback Issue

Can anybody please help me with the following issue?

When playing MPEG files in Windows Media Player 9 (windows XP), wmplayer seems to see the movie as only a minute, for example, despite the size. It plays the MPEG for a minute and then 'skips' through the rest.

Uusually, if I click halfway though the movie, for example, it will play from that point but only for the remainder of the slider i.e. 30 seconds.

I haven’t made any system changes but then again I’m not sure when this started happening. It could have been when installing xvid codecs a month ago.

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks

try keeping more than one player on your system.
i have about 5 different media players on my pc.
if it doesnt work on one, its bound to work on the other

They problem is probably the file itself being damaged. Where did you download it from?

First off, try playing it in VideoLAN (www.videolan.org)

I think it was a codec problem. I had to reformat, reinstall etc. for another problem and the same files play fine now. It seemed to affect MPEG 1 files only. I had made a note a few weeks ago as to the fix but I can’t remember if it had worked or if it was the reformat that solved this prob for me...

Start Menu — > Control Panel — > Sound and Audio Devices — > “Hardware” Tab — > Video Codecs

- Delete relevant MPEG codec
- Install new 3rd party MPEG decoder code

Thanks for your help though

Most windows OS’s come with a capable MPEG1 codec (for decoding purposes atleast) preinstalled. Perhaps something caused a conflict, or installation of Windows Media Player 9 changed something, hhmm.
