burn avi with nero

please help a dummy out in the past ive burned movies with no problem...but not in a while...when i try to burn...i hit video option hit the file hit burn and what i get are5 seperate files cd1....ext....mpegav.....segment....vcd....what am i doing wrong? other than banging my head against the wall...please help...i have a pile of coasters...ps im trying to burn to a cd not dvd...my dvd player plays most antying....thank you ..help...my head hurts....peace cc
