None of that worked for me. The problem seemed to hit ALL my audio codecs at once and removing and reinstalled the codecs didn’t fix it.

In the end only running Media Player Classic fixed it. As soon as I’d run it all my coded started working again in Windows Media Player.

I can’t play my music because Windows Media Player says I need tag 55. Can you help me get this tag?

Format tags, such as tag 55, are used by the Player to identify which decoder to use to play back your content. If you get the following error message, “The audio codec identified by the format tag 55 is required to play this file”, then the MP3 decoder on your computer has become corrupted or damaged in some way, and needs to be replaced. To fix this problem on a computer running Windows XP and Windows Media Player 9 Series:
From the Start menu, click Search.
Under What do you want to search for? click All files and folders.
Under All or part of the file name, type l3codeca.acm.
Click Search.
When the results are displayed, right-click the file and then click Rename. Rename the file l3codeca.bak.
Open Windows Media Player.
From the Help menu, click Check for Updates. An up-to-date version of l3codeca.acm will be installed on your computer. smiley

I tried some of yours proposals to fix my problem (error in reading Mp3 files “codec 55”, and only one succeded in solving it : the installation of codecs divx 3.11 et divx 4.12 (there is a valid link in a former post). In fact divx codecs indeed include Mp3-codec and i think divx 3.11 is the most important file u have to download (if u have to choose between 3.11 & 4.12).
Thx for all your help. (I’m french and i was “obliged” to search for a solution here to solve my issue)

Thanks again Weibe, your post was great.

I guess for others with codec errors, maybe think along the same lines. you’ll find an .acm file for each codec. Deleting the .acm file, and then reinstalling could be the solution. you should investigate what the correct acm file is first, and ensure you know how to reinstall the codec. not all will come from Microsoft, eg. for DivX you’ll need to run their installer again.

I had installed a codec pack that corrupted both WMP AND DivX...

After uninstalling the pack, everything was back to normal....

(Friend told me to get them. Darn you LAN parties!)

I have the same problem as the first post. It wont play audio. I just gives me that stupid tag 55 crap. Ive tried all your theories. Ive uninstalled and reinstalled and renamed and everything and nothing is working. I deleted ALL my codecs and Ive made a new profile. Nothing fixes and nothing bypasses it. The only idea I was unable to do was the divx alpha 311. I went to roughly 20 websites that supposedly had it and, 18 of which were in french, and they ALL had dead links or I got redirected to some page that I think was an error page but I couldnt read it cause I only know english. And I could not find it at all on the divx webpage. If anybody has any more ideas or has a WORKING 311 webpage I could be directed to I would be much appreciated. If not, then I guess Im gonna have to reformat =(

Reformatting is an extreme measure just to get wmp to work. It is really not worth your trouble when you consider that MPC or Zoomplayer are far superior and less bloated applications (not to mention free). Unless you need it to play WM9 movies, but I doubt it since they don’t use codecs smiley

I would rather rebuild and have a functional computer than deal with a corrupted program. Its like breaking your thumb and saying you still have 4 more fingers to use. This is the price I pay for downloading unknown codecs. I took the risk so I’ll just have to be more careful from now on. SCREW OGM FILES!! =( Nothing but AVI’s for now!!

Better yet, forget the avis and download only dvd-r! I gave up mpeg-4 a year ago and never looked back. dvd-r is far better picture quality, always ac3 sound, and needs *no* codecs to play.
Yes, it takes longer than a day to dl, but do several torrents at a time with and your movie collection will grow quickly.
