playback issues with single clips in monitor

when i import an mpg file, i can watch it fine after i drag in on to the timeline and play in the sequence part of the monitor, but when i drag it in to the clip section of the monitor and then proceed to play it, premiere ALWAYS crashes. It’s driving me crazy. Any help would be most appreciated.
