thefaceman Guest | My lastest search seems to only find it in list and not a downloadable codec.
Anyone know where I can obtain it?
Plus I am always curious why no one runs a service like the AntiSpyware where I can subscribe to get the latest codecs (including ALL of the past codecs)
in one exe file.
-thanks for your time

Don’t click on “full C++ source code”. Instead click on “pre-built DLL”. It will download a zip which you can extract with windows xp’s zip extractor or winzip. After you extract it, right click the inf file and choose install.

The closest thing to that are codec packs, which are updated constantly, but they are known to sometimes cause system instabilities. It works for some (maybe many) people, but the fact it could cause instability bad enough to need a reformat is a general reason the rest of the people don’t try their luck.

thefaceman Guest | Thanks. I actually found that page before I posted here. For some reason I missed the link you pointed out and intalled the older version.
After installing the new 2.11 version, I can at least play the file in DIVX player. But unfortunately, I cannot play it in window’s media player.
Maybe it is the codec’s behavior, but in DIVX when I go to skip forward in the AVI file, it goes back to the beginning of the AVI file.
This is probably outside of this forum’s area of expertise or intent though...thanks again.

-ps- Thanks for the feedback on the codec packs. Here is an idea for an All in one Codec product. Since some codecs can cause problems with some system, people would rather avoid an all in one installer. So instead of installing the codec create a codec installer that has ALL the codecs “ready to install” so when a user needs a codec the player that the user uses will know that this codec installer has the codec available. This will make it easier for people to find the codec they need without having to hunt down each one.
Then this codec installer should have the forementioned subscription service where the users can be notified on new codecs and have the codec installer updated when they want to update it.

I suspect the file may be truncated. Alternate players (divx, media player classic, videolan, avipreview, etc) are able to play avi files even if they are of incorrect length. Windows Media Player seems to be the only one that can’t. Just to be sure feed the file into gspot and click on the yellow box next to Stat.

I don’t think there’s any codec-player interface where codec pack and player notify each other of what’s missing, but codec packs do allow (manual) selective installation nowadays (you just check boxes/uncheck what you don’t want installed)

codecs aren’t like viruses or spyware where you have 50 new ones popping up every week. In a year you might see the release of 10-15 codecs max (usually much less), so an online subscription service like with antivirus or antispyware products may not be justified.
