Free Converting prog?

Hav no idea wat im doing but to get my windows movie maker .wmv file to work with Nero im supposted to convert it to a .avi then to a .bup .vob or .ifo right!? so i can burn it to dvd.... well dont have a credit card to get one of these converting prog. any ideas? or know of a free one :/ ta
