lame mp3 problems

hey lads wondering if anyone can help me. i downloaded a tv series with audio encoded in lame mp3 but he sound is bad, like theres a reverb/metal room effect to it. i downloaded lame acm codec but theres no change in the sound. does anyone know if i can fix it or did the guy who encoded it just do a bad job?
