For the past two years I’ve been burning avi files on a slow computer (1 GHZ celeron & 52X LG CD burner) on a CD-R using nero 5, It takes 5-6 hours just for a full disk of 80 minutes. But recently I’ve bought myself a new pc, (P4 @ 3.02GHZ, Samsung 16x DVD -/+ burner.) Pratically state of the arts. Well here my question. Since I’m new at the DVD burning thing I have a few questions I hope youll answer.

1) Since I’m using 8x disk on a 16x drive how long will it take to burn a full capacity single layer (4.7 Gcool disk and how many minutes can I record in each disk.

2) Could a DVD burner burn Avi, I hear it must be vob files but I’m hoping if their is other alternatives.

3) and finally how the quality compared to VCD’s, It horrible since the quality is lost on VCD

I’m hoping someone can answer my questions, Thx

all dvd authoring software n eeds to transcode your source video into mpeg2 format. in my experience, this take alot of time. so i output my vids to mpeg2 using any good NLE (non-lineal editor) first then author to dvd.

as an example, i wanted to make a dvd up of 3 half hour divx avi files (about 250mb each). a 4.7gb single layer dvd will hold up to 120 mins on high quality so i thought 3 half hour shows (90 mins) would be fine. my authoring software (sony dvd architect) took 13 hours to transcode the video & at the end of that it said it needed a 6 gb dvd for the burn!

i then (using sony vegas) re-made these avi files to mpeg2 files. the file size grew to about 1 gig each as mpeg2. and when i re-tried to author it took only 30 mins for the transcode and about 3.5gig on the dvd disc.

conclusion: most dvd authoring programs can transcode any source video - but not effectivly. i recommend you first output them to mpeg2 format and then author to dvd. save time and disc space...

um,... what was the question again?
