Nero Not working! PLEASE help!

Hey there.
I got this LG burner and it uses the program Nero startsmart. Anyhow i couldnt figure out how to use it so i called them and what they told me didn’t work.
I have a feeling it’s just that my dvd player won’t play AVI files.
So HOW can i get NERO to convert them to MPEG or whatever?
And Once i put in the dvd-r do i go to Create Video CD?
If not then what do i go to?
And about how long should the entire proccess take?
I am getting really fed up with this program it’s NOT working properly.

I had the lg nero but I unistall then I downloaded the original from nero.com and I will give you the serial number -1A23-0006-7130-1200-0000-4023.
