Google the name and model of your burner and go to manufacturer site and read the specs.Looks like your burner won’t support dvd-r so is normal for older models. Some burners can flash the firmware so you can install a new one from same site but if you’re not familiar how to do it is risky and can damage the burner.Good Luck.

Are you sure here is a list of all formats my burner supports: dvd+r DL, DVD+RW, DVD+r, DVD-RW, DVD-r, DVD-ROM, DVD Video, CD-da, CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, CD-ROM xa, CD-I, Photo CD, video CD and CD-Extra

it is an I/O Magic External USB 2.0 DVD-+RW/+-R Dual format double layer. I have also downloaded the Latest Firmware for the drive from the website...

I think the problem might be with my PC which is about 6 yrs old.... Agian all formats work with no problems, its just the DVD-R’s that cause my pc to crash......

Thnx for the help anyways im going to search more to see if i can get this fixed

Using Win98 with a nice burner like that is like driving a Porche on regular gasoline.I don’t ask you about your CPU speed or what Pentium or RAM.Anyway good luck again.
