Download the BS player but before installing BS player, install first the real, quicktime, winamp, and the most important is the DiVX player.Their codec are very important for your pc to play without error.I already incounter the no sound after installing BS player...so just be sure that all player is installed before BS is installed...

Rubytu your a freaking GENIUS!!! Who knew it would be so simple as “go to preferences and deselect 'automatically detect subtitle files' and then choose the subtitle file to be played with the movie using the 'browse' button”
Thank you Thank you Thank you,
now I will go back and watch some movies I missed sections of, like Eastern Promises... because I just couldn’t work the subs.. Its a whole new world!!!

Put your .AVI and .SRT in the same folder.
Then, enjoy.

Merry Christmas

The VLC player (mine is version 0.8.6c) will play the .avi and .srt (sub-title) files together on a Window PC. You will have to select the .srt file manually. Do the following:

o Play your .avi file using the VLC player.
o Stop playing when the VLC window openned.
o Select the following from the top menu
[Settings] — > [Preferences] to display the
“preference” window.
o Click on the '+' icon next to the “Video” option on the
left box of the “preferences” window. This selection
will expand more video related options.
o Select the “Subtitles/OSD” option. This will display
the “Subtitles/OSD” menu on the right side of the
“preferences” window.
o Click on the “Browse..." button and select your .srt
file.
o Click the “Save” button on the lower left corner of the
window.
o Now play the .avi file and it will include the sub-title
from your .srt file.

If you don’t want to do this each time, then you can merge the sub-title to your media. Rename your .srt file to the same name as your .avi file. Download the freeware version of AVIReComp and use it to merge these two files into a new .avi file. The sub-titles will be embedded in your new media .avi file.

After extracting the *.rar for the *.srt file using Winrar, I can play the *.avi and *.srt together in VLC or MPcstar, but the subtitles are garbled.

Any idea how to fix that? Thanks.

to frustrated:
1:use Windows Media player and download the codec for xvid files
http://www.wmplugins.com/ItemDetail.aspx?&codec=XVID

2: download codec for subs http://www.free-codecs.com/download/DirectVobSub.htm (this will load subs automatically)

3: download AC3Filter (sound filter)

4: put SRT file same folder with the movie
http://subscene.com/search.aspx

5: Enjoy the movie

thanks so much rubytu regarding the tip about how to get VLC player to read subtitles (go to settings — >preferences — >uncheck “autodetect subtitle files and manually select the srt file). This worked with my PC. Yay.

I downloaded a movie and have AVI file and several SRT files like ENG.srt, FRA.srt. If I an right, these srt files to support different languages for this movie.
I burned a DVD with these files and got 2 problems:
1. Om my PC the film runs OK but there is no choice available for supporting language.
2. The DVD does nit run on my DVD player connected to TV.

Could you please explain me how these problems can be fixed?

Thank you very much!

Downloaded VLC media player, went to open file, opened the AVI file, and then went to Video -> Subtitles Track, and loaded the SRT file, works perfectly now.

For Mac in VLC, go to preferences -> video -> subtitles/OSD and check advanced. Then in “subtitle autodetection paths” add a . (dot), so that it looks in the directory where you have your .avi file for the .srt file.

this is exactly my problem minus the japanese words. i have a mac, and this is exactly what’s happening to me. there are no subtitles options in my preferences for VLC. not sure why i’m having such a hard time with it.
