New: Windows Media Player 12 in Windows 7 can play SEDG (but not SMP4) files without any additional software.
Quick Solution:
PC users download and install this (Direct Link). Despite what it says on the download page (intended for Vista 32-bit), it works with Windows 2000 and XP too (when you extract the zip, you see a 2K_XP sub-folder; just run codec.exe - it’s smart and will know whether to install the Vista or XP/2000 version). (Thanks to all who posted the link in here).
A Vista 64-bit version can be found here
Mac users download 3ivx (SEDG only, but viewable in QuickTime and editable) instead or MPlayer OS X (playback only).
More Info:
Samsung’s implementation of MPEG-4 for some of its camcorders.
Miscellaneous: The codec is DirectShow-only. That means you can’t do any editing using a VfW (Video for Windows) editor like VirtualDub. Some older releases had a VfW module, but it was only for encoding (you still couldn’t open SEDG or SMP4 files in VirtualDub). Its principal use is to encode videos in other codecs into SEDG so that can they can play back on the camcorder. Here’s one of those older versions that allowed encoding in SEDG: Samsung’s “Unified Decoder of Miniket”. (The older version doesn’t appear to display movies in Windows Movie Maker on some configurations - thanks to the poster here for pointing it out).
If you wish to do editing (cut, merge, convert) with videos with fourcc SEDG in VirtualDub, use one of these:
- ffdshow-tryouts for editing in VirtualDub.*
- 3ivx. 3ivx doesn’t handle files with fourcc SMP4 yet, so you may need to use a fourcc changer to switch it to SEDG if necessary.
Keywords: SEDG, SMP4, Miniket, SC-D353, VP-M110, VP-X110L
* Someone requested more detailed steps. During installation of ffdshow-tryouts, make sure the boxes VFW interface and VirtualDub plugin are both checked. If you don’t need anything else, turn off all the audio and video codecs when you get to the page to select them. When done with installation, go to your start menu and find the entry ffdshow -> VFW configuration. Go to the decoder tab. Under codecs, find the line “Other MPEG4”. In the decoder column set it to xvid (preferred) or libavcodec. Remember to click apply. The SEDG or SMP4 file should be openable in VirtualDub now.
