Same problem here! It does not matter what camera is used. The guilty party is Pinnacle Studio!

Spaceman you are almost there. Simply remove the file : MjpgDecompress.ax from C:\Program Files\Pinnacle\Shared Files\Filter and all problems are gone away.

And as a bonus you still can use Pinnacle Studio

Good luck

I too HAD the same problem with AVI’s from my digi camera...Found that if I rename the “Shared” folder in Pinnacle, all AVI’s would play on WMP. Definately something to do with the shared files between WMP & Pinnacle.
Hope this helps.

Final thoughts,
Yes it was Pinnacle that was causing the problem. Unfortunately, Pinnacle Expression is part of a whole suite of programs including my CD-DVD burning software. There was only one uninstall option for the whole lot, so I will have to find something to replace that.
There is no compatability tab under Tools Options on my Media Player. (Is this because I have already uninstalled Pinnacle?).
Now I suppose the best thing to do is to e-mail Pinnacle to see what they say and hopefully for them to put it right.

hi dar,

have been 'playing' most of today...haven’t found any problems with other programs since uninstalling pinnacle. Everything seems to be working great now.

I had pinnacle 8 OEM edition preloaded on my machine and I had upgraded it with the latest patch. Perhaps an upgrade to a full retail version would have sorted the problem.(at a price!)

Oh something else...before I removed pinnacle I loaded an avi from my cam into windows movie maker and found it would play after I went into 'tools' 'options' and clicked on the 'compatability' tab.....there is a list of video filters in there....I turned off all the pinnacle filters and there was my picture!!! Thats how I knew for sure it was Pinnacle causing the problem.....Perhaps there is some way just to remove the filters without affecting pinnacle studio if you want to keep Pinnacle.

Thanks surbitonpete.smiley
No I don’t have an HP machine, it’s from Time (shame); their after sales support was appalling.
Quicktime has nothing to do with it as I haven’t yet reloaded it.
I have downloaded virtualdub, but haven’t got a clue how to do anything with it other than run the avi.
I haven’t tried uninstalling Pinnacle yet. As it’s preloaded, could I get it back without re-building my machine?
Have you noticed any problems yet with missing files as a result of uninstalling shared files?
Once again thanks. This is how a forum should work. (On one site I came across someone asking for e-mailed replies as this was easier. Of course, then nobody else can benefit from the knowledge).
I know there are reasonably priced packages out there that should do the job of Pinnacle (£20-£30), I should try one of these.

Wahey! the fact that we both had problems and we both had pinnacle studio gave me an Idea .....I uninstalled pinnacle studio and walah! My camera avi movies will now play in windows media player.

Note: When I uninstalled it... I said 'yes' to uninstalling shared files when the uninstall program warned me that they could affect other programs if I uninstall them.

Pity though I quite liked pinnacle but even the latest update had not cured the problem for me.

oh and another ps...

I have found I can convert, recompress and resave my movies using virtualdub.....and THEN they will work ok in Pinacle or any video player program...it’s just a lot of hassle
