Not a Mac-only solution: But I managed to convert all of my older .avi (IV50) footage to MP4 using Need4 Video Converter for Windows (http://need4video.com/). It costs a few bucks - but it enabled my video in the ancient IV50 format to be converted to the more future-proof MPEG4 format. The MPEG4 files are easily displayed in Quicktime on both Mac and PC.

No, it won’t work.
You’ll need to have “Classic” (Mac OS 9) installed.
If you have an Intel Mac - use BootCamp and boot into Win XP, these files play nicely in Windows Media Player.
The “Classic” environment doesn’t work with Intel Macs.

Hold on. What if you don’t have Mac OS 9 on your Mac? Is there no other solution? I have MPlayer, it didn’t work.

Thanks a lot, I already tried the mplayer, it didn’t work. But I downloaded the Indeo codec and it worked on Quicktime in OS9.

Cheers!

Another thought that hit my mind was you could try mplayer for mac os x. I believe mplayer was originally developed on linux and is like xanim in that it can use windows dll’s to decode videos in a specific codec.

Ligos has no plans to port the Indeo 5 to the Mac OS X platform. (see http://ligos.com/pdf_docs/Indeo_doc.pdf)
The Apple site describes a workaround though:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article2.html?artnum=60366
You have to reboot into Mac OS 9 (is this available to all Mac OS X users, or only to those who upgraded from 9 to X?) then possibly download the codec from that page.

Is there a Mac IV50 codec out there? I can’t seem to find one.
