FFDShow works only for decoding and play back, it cannot be used to encode and regular VirtualDub cannot work with WMV, it works with AVI’s only.

If you want to encode some video to Microsoft MPEG-4 (WMV), you can use their Encoder. It’s free:

Microsoft’s Movie Maker can probably do it as well.

FFDShow or the latest Windows Media Video 9 codecs:

FFDShow-alpha (recommended because it can’t possibly permanently mess up anything):

http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=53761&package_id=59355

It must also be configured to playback WMV1/7 and WMV2/8 (XP) - Start>All Programs>ffdshow>Configuration>Codecs and choose from the dropdown list (libavcodec = ON disabled = OFF)

Media Video 9 codecs (not needed it FFDShow works):
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/format/codecdownload.aspx
http://download.microsoft.com/download/7/2/e/72e9d6eb-3412-414b-b93f-85d851e01cfb/WM9Codecs.exe

For the WMV9 codecs to work, you just need to install it (double-click the pack/.exe and follow instructions etc).
