Thank you so much guys!!
My gripe: Windows explorer would crash every time I tried to open a media file. It was extremely annoying. I tried all the suggestions above, and it was the simplest one that worked. I got rid of the Xvid codec and now I can browse my media files freely.
Thank you for the tip!!!!

...THIS SAME FIX ALSO WORKS WITH ERRORS CAUSED WITH THE FILE CALLED .. xvid.ax
Removed the file and it’s all fixed.
Seemed like the other methods didn’t work for me, then found that file and it solved everything.
Never expected that to cause my computer to go haywire.
Thanks for the info!
hey
thanks, installing the codec fixed it for me
TY!!!
I VE HAD THIS LAME PROBLEM FOR YEARS.
THE “regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll "
WORKED PERFECTLY!
TY PPL
I was having the same problem with video from my digital camera (to the point I couldn’t even click the folder which they were in without Windows DEP popping up and then crashing Explorer.)
I too uninstalled Xvid and problem solved!
I used the codec installer utility available at:
http://www.jockersoft.com/english/codecinstaller.php
I then searched, found and reset the priority on the nero filter for video thumbnails to " do not use”
No problrms now
Topcat, you’re amazing - solved my problem completely
I’m having a similar problem, I,m running vista and every time I click on The “video” file containing all my movies windows freezes, can still access them from the side bar though
This guy is W-A-Y off base. I do “NOT” download movies at all and I am having the same problem with DVD’s I “OWN”. It is mostly a “Windows” problem. If I did not have over 10 grand in PC hardware and software fro video editing... I would buy a MAC!!!
One of the reasons we have crashing problems is because of pirating and the programers trying to stop pirates. It can’t be done!!!
If someone is going to steal they are going to steal. Find the thieves and jail them, don’t make it difficult for everyone else!
