VL545 Memory

I’ve got a VL545 with 1Gig memory. When I change a 2 or 3 hour DVD to *.avi then to *.mtv it takes up about 1.5 Gig of memory. Does anyone know if the VL545 memory can be increased??? or 2/3 hour DVD to *.mtv conversion compressed to less than 1G????
