Then follows a long list of filenames, many of which have "<- invalid checksum” after the filename.
I figure the firmware must be corrupt?

It plays and I can access the drive via Windows, but the LED screen just shows a mess of scrambled noise. I cannot see which song is playing or even how to get to the music menu except by trial and error — very frustrating.

If you would be so kind as to use s1clone (http://s1mp3.de/tools.s1clone.html) to read the flash image file and send it to me I would like to try to flash that image file to my player. If yours doesn’t work I can always flash my own (possibly corrupt) backup image file back to the machine. Attach file to e-mail at mwganson AT hotmail DOT com. Note: if you remove all your mp3 files from the player the resulting flash image file will probably compress smaller.

I get the semaphone error using s1clone if I plug the player directly into a USB 2.0 high-speed socket, but if I use an older (and slower) non-high-speed USB Hub I do not get that error message. It is slower, but it works for me.

Do not buy UXcell products they do not work well if your lucky you will get the one in 10 that does, and warranty Whats That. They just claim never to have received your item and if you do send registered and they can not deny it them they claim you did something to it and voided the warrenty.
