Hi,
I just successfully installed a 256Mb SD card. This is what I had to do to get it to work .. it may help some others.
1)Download the MMP3642.exe file from the “support”, “downloads” section for the mmp3642a of the memorex site. Make sure you pick the mmp3642a player - and that this is the player you have(!!!).
2)Extract the self-extracting zip file.
3)Locate the 'Programs' directory amongst the extracted folders/files.
4)Inside the 'Programs' directory is a file called “stusbmscformat.exe” - do NOT run it yet!!
5) Make sure your MMP3642 player does NOT have the MMC/SD card in YET! Connectit to your computer with the USB lead, and switch it on.
6) Now run “stusbmscformat.exe” and select the correct drive that is allocated to your player (there will probably be only one choice). Let it autoselect the FAT format, and click start.
7) When the format of the player;s integral memory is complete, disconnect the player, take out the battery and insert the MMC/SD card. Insert the battery, and reconnect the player to the computer.
8) Run “stusbmscformat.exe” again, BUT THIS time select the second drive down (that has been allocated to the SD card) and format. Again, let the “stusbmscformat.exe” program auto select the FAT options. DO NOT re format the integral memory of the player.
9) Both integral and MMC/SD card memories should be formatted now, and ready to go. The annoying error message referred to in previous posts should be gone.
This definitely works with a Sans Disc 256 Mb MMC/SD card. Should work with a 512Mb. Don’t know about 1Gb.

I have a MMP8500 I bought for my daughter, lost the installation CD, and Memorex just changed their website, and the download to format it can not be accessed anymore since it is a discontinued item. Can any of you help me access this file?

My MMP8570 also has a blank screen and I tried the Firmware upgrade posted 4.19.2006 and my player still seems to be dead. Maybe I did something wrong. Can you please walk me through it to help fix the dead player?
Mine says Ver.FOO4.A.O7D need help what do i do?
My MMP8570 is hosed too. It began restarting when I would skip songs, even with a full battery. I downloaded the firmware update from the Memorex site on 4/19. I followed the reformatting instructions, then loaded the firmware, and now I have a pricey storage deivce. No music, no display, just a place to store files. Anybody who’s had success with upgrading the firmware, I’d appreciate your help. (Maybe older firmware that works?)
i have memex mp3 mmp8500 suddenly it is not recognized by my pc and it seems ro no longer have radio nor anything maybe i deleted thedriver? i have the cd but i think i deleted the internal boot up...where can igetit? levihello@gmail.com
This is a way old thread, but hopefully someone will see this. I can’t figure out how to get into recovery mode! Even the document with the supposedly broken instructions isn’t even on the Memorex web sight anymore — their support site points to http://www.memorexelectronics.com/html/download/MMP3642_recovery_mode.pdf, but clicking the link just sends you back to their home page.
How do you put this goddamn thing into recovery mode? Memorex doesn’t provide a clue.
I found that simply holding down the power button while plugging it into the data cable did the trick for recovery mode, Wes.
My next hurdle is figuring out how to get the unit to read playlists, which the “feature” list on the product web page claims it is capable of, but which is nowhere in the manual. So far I haven’t been able to get it to recognize .M3U playlists.
Dear Cindy:
I have the same Memorex and still have the formatting disk. Are you interested on a copy?

how about us peeps who just can’t seem to get this player detected by windows xp via usb? i’d kinda like to format the sdcard using a card reader.
the usb port on my player is busted, is there a way to format my card via a card reader?

Having the same problem. After upgrading the firmware the player won’t turn on, and the computer won’t recognize it. Anyone with the same problem? Or maybe a solution?
Help! I have just purchased the MMP3642 and it will not let me upload music onto it. IT says error. I am not sure what happened? Don’t confuse formatting and firmware upgrade (the latter should be done in recovery mode).
Try removing the extension card, plug the player, press power button. You should see the player as removable drive in my computer. Right click - format (choose fat).
