I can’t play any movies on my Vimax F-009 mp4 player. I tried copying some ".avi” ".wma” ".mp4” files but it can’t detect them. What type of video files can it play? Thanks!

Well, I figured out how to format in FAT instead of FAT32 (control panel/performance and maintenance/administrative tools/computer management) but that doesn’t help, still getting format errors, files and folders being converted to weird symbols, crashing and restarting, etc. I’ve tried FAT and FAT32 with lots of different allocation sizes, no effect. Seems my problem is most pronounced when I start putting too much music on it (like over 100 songs)... I’ve tried with and without folders and also tried using windows media player to sync the music to my player, still nothing that fixes the prob.

I think its safe to assume that the chinese manufacturers of the S1 MP3/MP4 player’s software don’t know what they are doing; the software just doesn’t jive with windows or something. Part of the problem is getting access to the right firmware updates. Even then no guarantees. Guess I need to open mine up and get some numbers. I’m afraid of completely disabling the player though with botched attempts at 'updating.'

What we really need is someone to write a whole new program and interface for these things. I think thats what the people at s1mp3.org are doing (Swan, S1 Tools, and Balzac projects). Hope things move along quickly!

Obvious now... I, and many others, have MP4 players with falsely advertised memory size. Mine said 4gb when bought off Ebay, really its only 512mb. *$#@. This explains my formatting problems and many other glitches in the system.

Sorry everyone, but a firmware upgrade might not help. You can’t convert your 512mb to 4gb by upgrading the firmware. Here are two places you should go to learn more about this problem and what you can do.

Best thing to do is not mess with the firmware (if you haven’t already, if so restore to original if possible) and just use your player at the true memory size it has. As long as you don’t try to exceed the real memory size (ie: in my case I won’t exceed 512mb of data, songs, movies, etc.) it will work fine. If you do accidentally then reformat and start fresh.

guide to fake mp4 players:

http://reviews.ebay.com/The-Official-Fake-4GB-MP4-Player-Scam-On-eBay-FAQ_W0QQugidZ10000000002547758

open up your mp4 player and read the serial off of the memory chip, then look it up here to determine the true memory size of your player:
