XP Windows Explorer Avi Problem

Wow....thank you guys so much. I was having problems with Torrent Files and other large movies. Anytime I opened a folder with a bad file, or clicked on the file to get info, Windows Explorer would crash. I removed the media preview and now everything works fine.

Thanks a lot guys installing DivX fixed everything.

I´m having a very simillar problem... My windows explorer hangs when i open a folder with mpeg videos inside it. If i rename the files from file.mpeg to file.something the problem stops.

Does anyone have an ideia of what is wrong ??

Windows XP Pro , SP2 and fully updated by windows update.

I just want to say thank you very much you guys. I recently download an AVI file from bearshare. When I ran it it didn’t run but it slowed down my computer dramatically. So i control alt delete and found out that I wasn’t running any program but my window explorer was running using 100% cpu usage. Also i can’t delete the file.. now through this forum. i have finally deleted this file and everything works great. thank you very very much

Hi anonymous, many tks, I found it and here’s the text for anyone else who may have the same problem sometime. “Windows XP Explorer has a 'feature' to provide a preview in the Details box on the left of the file you have selected, if it’s supported. Image files, HTML pages, video clips, MP3s, etc are all previewed (even with the folder view open).
If you have a large movie clip and it either is corrupt (ie. no index from a partial download) or it uses an unsupported codec, then Explorer tries to load the whole file. This can slow your computer a lot and prevent deleting/renaming/moving/etc the file until it’s finished.
Simply do the following steps:
1) Open a command window (Start->Run, type in 'cmd' hit enter)
2) To remove image preview, type and hit enter
regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll
3) To readd image preview, type and hit enter
regsvr32 shimgvw.dll
4) To remove media preview, type and hit enter
regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll
5) To readd media preview, type and hit enter
regsvr32 shmedia.dll

I’ve the same problem with WINDOWS 2000 PRO / when I try to open an avi file it doesn’t work. I’ve tried to fix it with “regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll” but it didn’t recognize the command. i don’t understand because it worked with the command : “regsvr32 /u shim....dll”

Can somebody help me please ?

hey, sure this fix works but it also disables windows to preview audio files like .mp3, so you can’t organise by artist or track# anymore, isn’t there a fix which just prevents video previews??

i did not have a problem with mp3 files like you mentioned Christian,everything about mp3 files is the same like it was before the fix ...i use XP Pro with Service pack1 .zoomplayer,mediaplayer 10,star media centre for all video and winamp only for mp3

hello everyone.I’ve had similar problem as many users posted before me although I could delete the .avi files causing the problem (whisc was: explorer crashed every time I opened a file containing a .avi or .mpeg file)
I also didn’t want to mess up with registry and found out this codec:

It solved my problem and so far I haven’t had any other problems.

The problem is the codec lacking, the film (avi) contains a codec not installed on the PC, like Divx 5.0 (avaible from divx.xom) or advanced, in order to verify if the file.avi it has a codec that you don’t have, you open the file with G-Spot v. 2.1.1, downloadable from http://www.headbands.com/gspot/download.html

well here are 2 answers for ya...

1.email me if u want a special proggy a friend of mine made to delete a undeletable file.

2.to move a file that cant be moved you can use a program that has the option to open a file (eg.ms paint) and do what u have to do from that window that pops up.

PS: replacing the file doesnt always work
PS2: moving the file to the recycle bin doesnt work either since the thing wont let u do that in the first place.

Ahh, what a relief! I had just purchased a 200gb SATA HD and was thinking it had a problem. Nah, it’s those 9gb raw AVIs in my folder. :-)

Qlippoth, you can convert the file to another format with something like AVI to DVD Converter from here, http://www.avi-vcd.com/, then use Divx converter from here, http://www.divx.com/divx/create/download/, to shrink the file back down again. Also, you can use shexview.exe from here, http://www.nirsoft.net to disable the shmedia.dll. This is one method to save the file that I have used before myself, it works!

REGSVR32 /U SHMEDIA.DLL worked fine but installing latest DivX player codec solved the problems without losing the file summary in properties. I advise everyone to update their DivX codec and reload REGSVR32 SHMEDIA.DLL
