XP Windows Explorer Avi Problem

I seem to have an unusual version of this problem. I have four hard drives and this only happens on one of them. No problems with avi files one three, but on the fourth the system hangs up if I try to copy or play avi files. I tried the solutions above, creating the bat files shimgvwoff.bat, shimgvwon.bat, shmediaoff.bat, shmediaon.bat. They had some effect, but I still could not play the files. Hanging up the system was not as bad.

I have a bunch of issues that overnight started to happen.I can no longer play any video file on the web. If I plug in a jumpdrive my windows explorer turns some embedded objects into blank spaces with a little red x in the top corner. And now at times I get an error message that a library object is not located. HP customer support has been useless as well as the Microsoft website.
Does anyone have any ideas on what is causing this and a possible fix?

Only problem is I also lose my thumbnails if I do regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll — Is there any way anyone knows of getting rid of the duration and dimensions without losing the ability to view videos as thumbnails?

Thank you for this fix:
“4) To remove media preview, type and hit enter
regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll "
It did the trick.

Hope this helps someone. I once had a problem with opening my pictures and spent around 3 hours trying to work out the problem. I tried the SFC/SCANNOW trick, the chkdsk /r method and scanning with AVG. It turned out to be a 3rd party codec programme. I went to Add/Remove programmes and deleted the codec programme. Once that happened I no longer got those annoying 'Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close'. My advice is to avoid 3rd party codecs at all costs. If you notice this pop up then check to see if you have any 3rd party codecs like ffds show. Delete anything like this and it should work.
Sorry for being a bit long winded XD.

THANK YOU 2DSM2! I’ve have spent days trying to solve this problem! I’ve deleted the 'ffds show' codec and everything works again. The funny thing is, 'ffds show' was installed months back and never had a problem with it till a couple of days ago. But im happy everything is back to normal

I have tried almost all of the before mentioned
workarounds.
the only thing that worked for me was to boot into safe mode and rename the respective avi files.
Apparently one can rename the file to its original
(Crash producing)name with WE and not have any further problems.

Its because explorer queries the index of the file, and if there is no value it loops and loops the whole file. and when the file is large it is a damn sow process.
how to fix it:
1. Open up regedit.exe.
2. Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandler
3. Export the PropertyHandler key just in case.
4. Delete the “Default” value which should be "{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}"
Fixed the problem for me. let me know if it works for you.

If you know where the corrupted AVI file is, simply do the following instead of doing Registery bull**** edits:
1: open a folder any folder that doesn’t contain AVI files.
2: Right click, select View, then click on Tiles or any other option but don’t select Thumbnails.
3: Go in to the directory that contains the corrupted AVI and simply delete it.
Then this will prevent you from getting “Explorer needs to close, we are sorry for any inconvenince” because of the shitty shmedia.dll file in the future.
