Unregistered Codec?

When I play a video in Windows Media Player 10 six white blocks appear in the upper right hand corner. I am assuming that this is some unregistered codec that is placing a watermark until it is registered. Does this sound right? How can I get rid of it? How can I find out which codec is producing it?
