I have a few mpegs that I have d/l from online. They range 500 - 700M and are at least 60 minutes long.
One file I copied from an old HP Pavillion (where it worked perfectly in ANY player) onto a new HP Pavillion. The only difference being my new PC is and XP and my old was ME. The file is 68 minutes long but now when I play it, only 58 SECONDS play, even though properties for the file show it to be 68 minutes long.
A second another file that is 83 minutes long, every player I have will only play 15 minutes of the file. In fact, WinAmp clearly shows it as a file that is 83 minutes but will only play 15 minutes of it.
Oddly, if I try to play either of these files in WinDVD, they work fine. The timer in WinDVD won’t work properly but the file plays as if it were “normal”.
I have d/l multiple codecs (including DivX, MUSK5, etc) and nothing will work for running the files in WMP, WinAmp, RealPlayer, or QuickTime like they did on my former PC.

Time & Length don't match
I have had this same problem with audio books, and have never found a satisfactory solution to the problem. The book could be 2-3 hours long, but the play time comes up a fraction of that (right around 40 minutes, in fact, every time).
Is there a solution for this problem?
How you made the transfer from one computer to the other? If you back-up the file maybe is just data and you loose something.
This usually indicates corruption somewhere in the file. Usually if there’s corruption in the data, most players will play the video up to the point of corruption and stop. Some (in your case WinDVD) will ignore the error and keep playing on.
Usually if the file is mpeg-1 I tell people to open the video in virtualdub, and play it in there, since it’ll skip over any corrupt points (plus, when it scans the file it will detect such corruptions and report them to you). you don’t need to do that since WinDVD handles it fine. If for some reason you want to repair the file there’s probably utilities out there that can be used to patch the corrupt spot. I’m not familiar with any, but i’m sure they can be unearthed via a google search.
