I know this is an old thread, and hopefully i’ll find the answer elsewhere if no one that knows sees this, but is ATI’s .avi file extension the same as DivX’s .avi file type?

I am using Nero to try an convert some ATI (ALL-In-Wonder) .avi file types to something else... like mpeg 1 or mpeg 2.
But the version(s) of Nero 5 & 6 that I’m trying do not really recognize it and won’t allow it to be edited or converted.

I have nero 7 if that happens to be able to convert it, but it seems like Nero 6 (for example had no problem recognizing a .avi compressed movie made from DVD with either DivX or Xvid format....

Normally, I can use ATI’s built in Media Library to convert the ATI .VCR format to Mpeg 2 or Mpeg 4 ext...but no such option for ATI’s .avi created TV recordings.
Besides there LARGE file size, they also don’t play on many file players. VLC (which seems to play most anything) will start to play the file and then it goes to video & audio CRAP....only ATI’s File Player & Media Player (Alternative) Classic plays them without hiccup. reply

I was having the same problem. The easiest way to fix it that I have found it just type in “VLC Media Player” in google and it’s the first or second link. Download it and then open the file with VLC Media Player. reply

I sat with this issue for a few hours, it was a bitch.
REinstalled latest DIVX, fdshow, reinstalled VLC etc.
tried to open it on mac where i got a more detailed error repord. Downloaded quicktime 6 which was the only player with that codec and it worked like a charm.

I had the same problem for a couple of days. My solution was to download WinFF (http://xrl.in/35pq) and convert the files to the same or different format. reply

I’ve read the solutions, but I don’t know if they’ll work for me, my problem is a bit different in the way that, I could only play .AVI videos on Nero, but not on Windows Media or Quicktime...or anything, just Nero, then my Nero expired and now I can’t watch it anywhere.

Is this the same problem???

P.S.: I wanna burn my videos on a DVD by I can’t cuz it says that doesn’t “support” the files.

They’re all AVI, I have other AVI files (videos that I take with my camera) but these in particular won’t show image, just audio. reply

There is a much easier way to play avi files. Just download a free version of Prism Video Converter and convert them to wmv files. reply
