I don’t know what the hell is going on. I have tried reinstalling divx, windows media player, my xvid codec and now i’m out of ideas.
All my old movies that used to play no longer do. It doesn’t matter what the video file is: mpg, avi, wmv, none of them play
Everything starts up fine, but there is no video just the audio plays.
Help me somebody!?
i’m sure it’s gota be something easy and dumb, but i can’t figure it out
Tru out these 2 players. Here r the link.

VideoLAN Client) is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and ...
2 - BSplayer
Multimedia application with AAC/MP4 support through DirectShow filters like 3ivx,
CoreAAC or ffdshow.
PS. If vlc couldn’t play certain types of avi files(this player can handle the most complicated files), then switch 2 bs player instead. How hard can it b.
If this helps any1 diagnose the problem:
the last thing i remember doing on my computer was downloading some tv shows off ares and playing them in that player. The ares video player no longer plays movies either....
Do you have any mega codec beside All in One? The problem I had on my old computer was ffdshow and I remeber All in One is a check mark on it.Choose only DivX but unistall any codecs you have not the players and keep only one.K-lite and Ace mega pack are to complex and on my computer with Media Centre is changing the setting.Good Luck.
Hi, perhaps this is something to do with Windows XP or one of it’s updates?
I am having the same problem on a brand new Dell laptop, NONE of my avi, mpegs or video files will play, I only get sound. They all still play perfectly on my old PC, which incidentaly I installed the Service Pack 2 fix on, maybe this is the problem?
BTW, I have not made any changes to my laptop either, it is exactly as it was shipped from Dell
guestfromthe uk. Perhap this player might end ur misery. Here’s the link.

I have the same problem now. Mine occured after I tried to hook up my PC to my TV using the TV out on my Radeom 9600. I’ve done it before successfully, but this time it failed to work, and now when I try to view ANY video in ANY program, I get only sound and no video. I think it’s trying to play it on a different display or something, but all other displays have been disabled and don’t show up. I’m at a loss to solve this problem, and I’ve solved many problems in my day (I’m also a tech support guy)
All say new computers so i would have to guess and say somehow your display options or not correct. If you use a nice ati graphcs card you have to display monitors you can choose from the “main” and the"secoundary monitor” The secoundary monitor is for tv activation. to fix this right click your desktop and go to properties then select settings and then advanced. ok now select the display options and if your using the ati graphics card u see a monitor tab and a tv tab. now if the tv tab is selected it will look good on your monitor but cannot play video files but you will see video on a tv. If you unclick tv selection you can see video on your monitor but not your tv. most cards enable tv by default and certain movies you download will trigger it to switch. i dont no why but my does it sometimes. Its without a doubt the tv enabler on your machine thats why it works on old pc that has crappy graphics. i ran into this promblem before but i couldnt see the video on my tv but could see it on my monitor.
Also nvidia cards has the same features and alot of onboard grphics as well. hope this helps
Thanks for the suggestion, but I have the ATI Catlayst control center instead, so it’s a little different. I’ve played around with the options in there a ton, but I decided to try to play a video and then play around with some of the options in there, because they were grayed out otherwise (apparently you need to play a video to open them up). I really didn’t change anything, just the video preset selection from custom to home, which should have nothing to do with anything (it’s just picture quality), but my videos are now working. I tried using System Restore to go back to an earlier working date, but as usual, Windows wouldn’t let me restore to any of the dates I tried (a lot). Maybe it partially restored it or something, who knows.
Good luck to everyone else with this problem.
Me to i have the ati catlayst as well. But it still applys to u. Almost all ati graphics cards come with catlayst on the cd. Go to your display options not your catlayst options. your display does major effects and the catlayst just improves or degrades quality. I have the same card 9600 so i know u have that option.
Tapakip, the same thing you did just worked for me. I changed it from custom to home, and now it works fine. Wow, what a relief, i have no idea what caused it... but now i know how to fix it. Thanks for fiddiling around and fixing the problem.
I wonder if ati knows about this?? I’m gonna look on their site, if i find anything i’ll let everyone know.
Had the same problem with my TV. I was running a line from computer to my TV using an NVidia card. After a windows automatic media update, my Zoom player, Winamp, every player I had EXCEPT the crap Windows Media player would give me sound only on my T.V and no video. Desktop, icons, player body, sound, everything was fine, just no video. Finally I found that if I set my T.V as my main monitor and my computer monitor as secondary it would work fine. Pain in the ass......
Could someone please explain how I would go about changing “the video preset selection from custom to home." I’ve been experiencing the same problem with my ati 9600 card and the catalyst software i.e. movies play sound but the screen stays black. a step by step guide would toally help me out alot since I’m not the most computer savvy person. THX!!!
As I wrote above. I had the same problem with exactly the same card. What I did was.....(assuming yours is the same which it may well not be....) step by step....here we go......!!!!!
Right click on your desktop.
Open the NVidia display option.
Go to the monitor setup area.
Select Clone View BUT set you T.V as main monitor and your computer screen as secondary. It will still play movies fine on your computer monitor but you will be able to see them on your T.V too.
I have since discovered that my computer restores default settings for itself after ANY change (even unplugging it`s cable from the T.V when I wanted to plug in a DVD player instead, reset the computer!) and default is, naturally, Monitor as main screen, TV as secondary......
Hope this helps.
I was having same issue, tried all suggestions but to no avail until I went into:
1) settings on VLC
2) then selected extended GUI
3)on the video tab I checked on image clone and then a second window came up and there was my video.
4) I then unchecked video clone and it was still there
