My Avi files are messed up

I had to reinstall windows since I had an HC melt down.

After installing XP etc I tried to play some AVI files. It recognise them and play them however they are very dark and colours are messed up. Too much red and can hardlly see anything since its too dark.

I install divx etc and still doing the same thing. Windows media or Core media player or any other player will play them the same.

Any ideas how I can fix this please.
