moviemaker error-unknown error

When I try to capture video manually on Windows moviemaker, it only lets me capture in the dv/avi mode-the highest capture setting.
If I try another capture rate in the manual setting, it gives me an error message “an unknown error has occurred”
If I want to use a lower capture rate, I have to capture the whole video automatically.
Any suggestions?
