Media Player Closes when I try to play AVI / Xvid files?

I need some help here! When ever I try to play an AVI or XVid file, my Windows Media Player 11 gives me the “Has encountered an error & must close” notice. This is very frustrating! Is there anything that can be done? For some reason I cant even restore my computer to an earlier date!

I’ve downloaded the files thru a bit torrent, they were from aXXo, the files used to work great, then all of a sudden I can’t open / access the files?

Please Help! reply

I had the same problem today, it was fixed when I installed ffdshow:

http://ffdshow-tryout.sourceforge.net/

It’s some sort of multi-codec. reply

What if Windows Media Player won’t play AVI files- Solutions:

1. Install AVI codec to play AVI files

2. Play AVI videos in Windows with VLC

3. Convert AVI to Window Media Player friendly video formats with Brorsoft Video Converter or Handbrake.
