media player

I have downloaded AVI files from my digital cam to my computer. The computer transformed these files to windows media player when they where saved, even though they are quicktime enabled.
when i try to run these movies in windows media player, i see nothing but a strange flare. it looks like i lack the right coded.
any information about download of the right codec will be helpfull.
