Importing AVI file into Sonic myDVD

I get a message saying ''could not make a thumbnail, make sure you have the appropiate decoder installed'' anyone have any solution to this? I am not at all technical and don’t understand the big technical words, I have been trying to figure this out all week and I think I am doing more damage then progress. I need step by step instructions if you don’t mind please :)
