Im new to svcd's can you give me pointers?

Ok I think i understand some of it. But heres my problem.

A. I have a fairly high quality video thats a mpeg-2 format. Can i burn it directly onto a cd/r or do i have to do something to it first. Also, will any old burning software work?

b. i have some lower quality video’s that I wanted to burn. I used a program someone else recommended, called TMPGEnc DVD author. The person said it’d make a mpeg into a mpeg-1 or something like that, so it’d work on my dvd player. I tried that, and it didn’t work. Perhaps im not using the right burning program. Or not doing something else.

Im not looking ot burn full length videos, just small ones. What do i need to do exactly. Please be specific with certain softwares i may need to use if you can. Like i said, im new to all of this.

Also, im only looking to burn on a cdr/w no dvd’s atm. So please keep your responces to those that id use in this case.
